Kinetic Sculptures
Carl Morgan
Bainbridge Island, Washington, USA
I design and build kinetic sculptures. Creating them is a way to share fun and a love of math and physics, but they're also a way to spin and share stories.
All good stories rely on unexpected complications. Much as our own lives often unfold surprises for us, each of my pieces seeks to offer up an unexpected story.
To present the unexpected, these sculptures employ seemingly simple mechanical principles that nevertheless combine to produce surprisingly complex, unpredictable, or chaotic actions.
Sometimes, I start with a story idea and seek a mechanism with which to capture it. For example, what are the social perils that come into play when sharing a pizza with friends?
At other times, there is an interesting mechanical movement or mathematical quirk that begs to tell a story. For example, how can an unusual property of hyperboloids help a lonely plane hyperbola to find love?
A long lifetime of engineering has provided me the tools to plan and fabricate these pieces. A long lifetime of adventure, variety, and wonderful friendships suggests endless stories to breathe into them.
I hope that you enjoy giving them a push and watching them share their stories with you.
